Then they went with R16's.

At the time the R-16's arrived American Car and Foundry had built the majority of cars on the subway system. They were a good car builder with a proving record. The ACF cars that followed the R-16's were the IRT's R-26 and R-28 which gave good service for many years and eventually became "adopted" Redbirds.

One is left to wonder what was wrong with the r-16's. They certainly did not like cold weather.
