From 1936 when the line opened to rockaway Av till 1946 when it opened to ENY, there was a diamond Xover between the 2 exp tks N/O Rockaway Av. The lcl tks at Ralph and Rock Aves were covered over by temporary wooden platforms and trains operated on the exp tks between Utica and Rockaway Av which was configured somewhat like Flatbush Av on the IRT. Apparently the temporary plat at Rock Av didn’t quite line up with the regular platforms since there is a location on the exp tks approximately opposite the 8 car marker on the lcl tk with a few ft of type I roadbed instead of the concrete where the bumping blocks used to be. It was probably done that way to allow for a crossover ramp for passengers to get to/from the entrance/exit. When ENY first opened, the wooden platforms were remove from the N/b tk and while S/B trains continued to used the exp tk S/O Utica, N/B trains used the lcl tk. The way the operation ran was that S/B trains used the exp tk to N/O ENY where they crossed to the N/B exp tk.At that point there was a diamond Xover between the N/b Lcl and N/B exp tk and trains used the N/B island platform at ENY as a stub terminal. while the tracks and stations were completed between ENY and Euclid. I don’t have exact documentation about it so I cant say for sure whether or not that operation continued up until the line opened to Euclid or whether at some point the line S/O ENY was completed enough to allow trains to use the lcl tk between Utica and ENY and relay S/O the station. During the original operation the switches at Rock Av were controlled by the tower at Utica and I had occasion to visit the tower and by looking at the model board in the proper light, could see where the switches and signals at Rock Av had been painted over. The Xover space N/O Rock Av is still visible and since support columns between the express tks were omitted, there are extra support columns between the lcl and exp tks in both directions tp support the roof of the tunnel.
