Re: Tuscarora Almanac for March 25

Posted by W.B. on Wed Mar 25 13:18:58 2020, in response to Tuscarora Almanac for March 25, posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Wed Mar 25 05:11:59 2020.

And when Third and Lexington Avenues became one-way on July 17, 1960, the 3 was basically replaced by a new "short-run" branch of the M-101 that ran between 125th and 23rd Streets (while the entire M-101 itself was rerouted southbound on Lexington north of 24th Street). Per 'andy', this branch was driven by Fifth Avenue Coach Lines drivers on buses marked 'Surface Transit Inc.' and assigned out of 100th Street (now Tuskegee Airmen) depot. That same day the 2 Park Avenue South-Madison Avenue line was extended to 146th and Lenox to cover for the loss of the 4; not until March 2, 1969 would the 2 (which by then was the Lenox Avenue branch of the Fifth and Madison Avenues line, the Seventh Avenue branch of which - 2A - is today's M2) be eliminated and replaced north of 116th by the M-101A - Third, Lexington and Lenox Avenues line (M102 after 1974), which north of 24th Street was also a de facto revival of 4, only now going up Third. So the replacements for 3 and 4 had different timelines for their substitutions and activations.
