You also have to remember the time these roads were made or designed. Freight Railroads still handled much freight. The roads were built to be aesthetiically pleasing and for recreational traffic. Back then, things were made to look pretty, hence the stone attractive bridges, and the landscape.
People are looking at these roads through the eyes of people in the post 1960's eyes, rather than than when they were actually built.
