I’m not sure. When I lived in Wash Hts I always hoped to get an R-16 whenever I rode the A. AFAIK, unlike the R-10s which occasionally showed up on the AA/BB the R-16s operated exclusively on the A. I had heard that when those 50 R-16s were on the IND they only had signs for the A Line and If I recall, the side route signs did not have the actual letter A but rather read “Wash Hts 8th Ave Exp” which was the reading the R-10s had. The R-16s lasted on the IND at least till the summer of 1958 since a train of them was used on the short lived “Rockaway Special" that ran during that summer. The Rockaway Special operated similarly to the Aqueduct Race Track specials but as part of the premium fare, a ride ticket to Rockaway Playland was included. The special made only one trip in the late morning on weekends between 42/8 lower and Playland station making a single stop at Hoyt. There was no return trip.
