But those stairs don't seem to go anywhere. I'm thinking those are very old stairs that date to when this was a railroad line, rather than a subway, and so didn't need a fare-control area. Possible?

Those stairs have to go somewhere or otherwise those stairways would have been fenced off and closed to the public.

I'm also thinking the head-house in the second picture (which is on a street) isn't the same as the one in the first picture.

Both station head houses are one in the same. This can't be Park Place or Dean St.
