Re: Awkwafina 7 Flushing Line Announcements

Posted by randyo on Sat Jan 18 02:40:44 2020, in response to Awkwafina 7 Flushing Line Announcements, posted by GojiMet86 on Fri Jan 17 17:08:20 2020.

Her announcements were not the first ti inject a bit of humor into subway announcements. In the late 1950s/early q960s there was a C/R who worked the Bway IRT Line by the name of Abe Steinberg who was referred to as the “poet laureate of the subway.” He was one of the C/Rs whose train I rode on he way home from high school And certain days I would ride the whole last trip from V/C to So/Fy and back. Some of his announcements included things like “66 St the 99 upside down station,” “137 St City College for better knowledge,” and “59 St Columbus Circle, change for the IND if you want it.” A few years later another C/R who also worked the Bway Line by the name of Harry Nugent attained a small bit of fame in the news media for making similar announcements. Considering the time frame he worked it wouldn’t surprise me if Abe Steinberg broke Harry Nugent in.
