The explanation for Ely Avenue is that Queens wasn’t converted all at once, and LIC was converted later. Ely (and Van Alst for that matter) lasted longer and given that the area was already heavily developed, survived in the popular consciousness to the time of the IND.While it's true that street name changes in the Long Island City area, which occurred in 1925, were at the late end of the 1915 to 1926 Queens change cycle, they were still 14 years before the 23rd Street-Ely Avenue station opened. |
