Tuscarora Almanac – December 11, 1988 – The Book of Archer Avenue

Tuscarora Dispatch No. 16
The December 1988 Service Changes
Opening of the Archer Avenue Subway

Preface: The opening of the Archer Avenue subway was a significant event in the history of the subway system and affected almost every Division B route. This dispatch will provide a brief description of the line itself and a detailed listing of the routes. In order to preserve my sanity I will consider all affected lines, Queens Boulevard, Archer Avenue, Jamaica Avenue, as running north and south, railroad and compass directions notwithstanding. I have tried to be as accurate as possible but remember that the Archer Avenue subway is in its 30th year of operation and some things where very different back then. For example there was no 63rd Street Tunnel and the 6th Avenue Line ended at 57th Street. The times given for the hours of service are in most cases approximate. If I have inadvertently left out your favorite route please let me know.

Part 1 Outline History and Description
Ground was broken for the Archer Avenue Subway on October 23, 1973. Revenue service began on December 11, 1988. The subway actually consists of two separate lines which do not have any track connections which other even though they share a common tunnel under Archer Avenue. The longer of the two lines is a branch of the IND Division Queens Boulevard-Jamaica Line. Hereafter referred to as the IND Archer Avenue Line. The shorter line is an extension of the BMT Division Contract IV Jamaica Avenue Line. I will refer to this as the BMT Archer Avenue Line.
The two track IND line branches off from the four track Queens Boulevard Line north of Briarwood / Van Wyck Boulevard station using ramps built in the original construction for a proposed Van Wyck Boulevard Extension which was never built. It runs underground along the west side of the Van Wyck Expressway to Archer Avenue where it turns east and follows Archer Avenue to the terminal at Parsons Boulevard, a distance of about 1 Ύ miles. The tracks continue beyond the terminal to 160th Street where they turn south onto 160th Street and continue to about South Road. There are three stations on the line; Jamaica-Van Wyck located more or less at the intersection of Jamaica Avenue and Metropolitan Avenue; Sutphin Boulevard and Jamaica Center-Parsons Boulevard both located on Archer Avenue. The Jamaica-bound track is signaled as D2A while the Manhattan-bound track is signaled as D1A.
The BMT Jamaica Avenue Line originally terminated at 168th Street. It was prematurely cutback to Queens Boulevard in 1977 and again cutback to 121st Street in 1985. The el structure was left intact to at least 127th Street. The BMT Archer Avenue begins at this point. It leaves the Jamaica Avenue alignment and runs more or less southeast on the west side of the Long Island Railroad Mainline before descending into a tunnel. It then turns east under Archer Avenue sharing stations with the IND Line at Sutphin Boulevard and Jamaica Center. The Jamaica-bound track is signaled as J1 while the Manhattan-bound track is signaled as J2. The IND Line uses the upper level at both stations while the BMT uses the lower level. This line is about 1 ½ miles long. The tracks continue beyond the terminal to about 160th Street.
All stations on both lines are two-tracked with a single island platform. There is a diamond crossover west of the Jamaica Center station on both levels. Trains changes ends in the station.
The service changes connected with the opening of the Archer Avenue subway were the most far ranging since the opening of the Chrystie Street subway in 1967 and 1968 and that is the focus of this article.
The tracks on the north side of the Manhattan Bridge were re-opened allowing the “B” and “D” trains in Manhattan to be reunited with their long sundered brethren in Brooklyn. The tracks on the south side of the bridge were closed once again and BMT Broadway Line trains to Brooklyn had to use the Montague Street Tunnel. The “K” Washington Hts-8th Avenue Local was discontinued so “A” trains had to run local north of 145th Street at all times on the weekends.

Part 2 Highlights
A new service the “Z” Jamaica-Nassau St. Express was begun and this allowed the return of peak hour skip-stop operation on the BMT Jamaica and Broadway-Brooklyn Lines.
Skip-stop service on the Brighton Line was discontinued with the return of the “Q” express.
“R” trains would be extended to 179th Street-Jamaica at all times.
“A” trains would run express on the Fulton Street Line on weekdays from 6 AM – 9 PM. Previously express service had run only during rush hours.
Several new free transfer points were opened:
Jamaica Center and Sutphin Boulevard between the E,J and Z.
42nd Street-8th Avenue (A,C,E) and Times Square (1,2,3,7,S,N,R)
51st Street (6) and Lexington Avenue-53rd Street (E,F) (Note: Opened December 12, 1988) A paper transfer must have been used. The free passageway between the two stations opened on June 26, 1989.
Court Square (G) and 23rd Street-Ely Avenue (E,F)
