The NIMBY phenomenon has caused lots of problems for improved transit ideas for many years. The Rockaway Beach branch of the LIRR which is now abandoned is one example in that it could have been used but the NIMBY crowd said no. Same thing for the F train being extended out to Little Neck Parkway and Hillside Ave. as proposed in the IND Second System - it would have been a good thing, but the NIMBY crowd said no. Hopefully a new generation of people will see the light and allow for improvements to be made - and upgrading of all infrastructure should be budgeted for as regularly as one would plan upgrades to one's own home - at some point in time it will be needed, like a new roof on the house, new windows or doors, new sidewalk in front, new paint on the exterior, and the list goes on. Who likes waiting in the snow for a bus when a subway underground would get people home sooner and out of the elements ? |
