I'll be curious to see how it plays out. Presumably they won't be doing anything irreversible, in the event it doesn't work. I'm a bit cynical about the prospects, since I was living in downtown Chicago when nine blocks of State Street were converted to a pedestrian and transit (and later taxi) mall in 1979. They converted it back to a full-service street after 17 years--but in the meantime we had lost five department stores and other retail along that stretch of State, blamed at least partly on reduced auto accessibility.Alan Follett South San Francisco, CA |
