In Southern Pacific days, any train headed toward SF (the center of the world, right?) was WB,; away,EB. So a geographically SB train from Portland to Oakland was considered a WB. PRR considered trains from NYC to Wash WB, not SB.
And in highway signage here in the SF Bay Area, we have a stretch of I-80 and I-580 (shared ROW for several miles) running N-S. Entry ramp signage shows I-80 East and I-580 West pointing in the same direction.
