Also, I wasn't sure why they had those railroad crossings facing perpendicular to the tracks, or what they're even for

That is weird. There's what appears to be a bicyle lane to the right of the tracks, so I was thinking it was for that so no bicycles go by while the train is there, but the arm of the gate looks like it would actually block the train. Who knows.
