would avoiding maintenance costs have saved that much money through the years for switches such as these (or anywhere else in the system) to be removed?

Sites like the one above - if these were left in place, wouldn't switches facilitate any kind of potential train moves that became necessary, revenue ones for the benefit of passengers and non revenue moves to yards/shops etc. - the latter especially - efficientt train movement between tracks benefits normal operations immediately, and less down time for active rolling stock being moved - i.e. less travel time to switching sites for immediate revenue route changes, or for a massive fleet movement from a secondary yard to 207 or CI for major work?
