Yes.It was because of this,the TA was tossing around the idea of using slightly narrower rail cars for the Eastern Division routes. THIS evolved into the R143s type car with the tapered upper body of a little over 9ft. The original idea was an Expanded IRT sized car of 65-67ft,simular to the original R62 design car. However,both designs were dropped in favor of uniformity system wide. R143 design proved to be so durable and eye catching,that there was no REAL need to make any major changes other than core technology(see R211). BODY WISE,the design is sound. To me,the R110B would have been the car for the immediate future if it were 65ft instead of 67ft. |
