Thats where they used to store the old canvass curtains for all the trains assigned to leave at that particular track. Those curtains had to be manually rolled up & down with a portable crank by the gateman assigned to that track. Those gatememn had to be fleet of foot when there was a track change & the departure curtain had to be moved. They have long since been sealed shut and gateman positions long since abolished. The curtains are enjoying their retirement in various now retired employees' houses.AFAIK the compartments, there since day one of the current terminal, can't be altered (aside from a fresh coat of paint from time to time) or removed a/c landmark status. |
