In this country in regular service, around 90, but in England they got one up to 108 on a test run. One problem with our 3rd rail systems is the current carrying/delivery capability of a steel rail (or even aluminum and steel composite) and limited sets of shoes that would exist in a loco hauled scenario. An EMU set would not have the shoe problem, but traditional US 3rd rail voltages make it difficult to deliver the amount of power required for high powered loco hauled trains. Substation additions would get expensive. |
