Not only is it expensive, it would limit maximum speeds. Empire Service trains routinely exceed 3rd rail speeds, and acceleration is less of a factor when the stops are further apart. Aceleas will never be rebuilt to run on a DC source. and I don't see NYS paying for catenary.
