Not only that, in some cases they used heavily insulated jumpers to connect the 3d rail to the DD1 contact shoe in cases where the siding was close to a grade crossing with its accompanying gap. The conductor who did the hooking up & disconnecting must have had balls of steel (or a couple belts of jungle juice) to do this, especially in the rain.Things were done very differently back in the days before OSHA. |
