There's a practical reason for "Buy American" - the idea is to keep manufacturing plants, associated supply lines, and a capable workforce at hand in case we have a war. Loosen the grip too much and we could be caught unprepared.One of the reasons we were able to win WWII was the ability to repurpose civilian infrastructure to rapidly produce ships, tanks, etc all throughout the war. Could we do that today with our current infrastructure and resources if we were unexpectedly blockaded from the Eastern Hemisphere? |
