There are for profit companies that provide fire services to towns. Rye Brook's experience demonstrated a few perils. Incidentally, fire departments are an outgrowth of insurance companies providing fire insurance. The insurance companies would fight fires on policy holders' property. There were many companies competing for policy holders within the same geographic area. That system did not work in the 19th century. |
