Zimmerman was told not to get out of his car. He then deliberately disregarded those instructions, chased down this 17-year-old boy, physically attacked him, and when he began to lose the struggle, Zimmerman produced a firearm with which he shot and killed Trayvon. Zimmerman was the aggressor, and Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law should have protected Trayvon (who was legitimately present on the grounds of the development), not Zimmerman.Put another way, imagine you are 17-year-old Trayvon. You're walking home from the store, on property you have permission , as a guest, to be on. A strange man in street clothes jumps out of a car and runs towards you. This individual has nothing identifying him as a cop, or even a neighborhood watch member who has no police authority whatsoever, accosts you for no apparent reason. Are you seriously going to believe this stranger has benevolent intentions? No, you're going to understand that it is now necessary to defend yourself. Zimmerman is free today because no one, not even the prosecutor, thought Trayvon's life was worthy of justice under Florida law. There was plenty of evidebce pointing to Zimmerman's guilt, starting with the fact that Zimmerman chose to take the law into his own hands. |
