It seems like freight and passenger rail don't mix well. Perhaps passenger rail will really work only whereA. Freight traffic is so sparse that revenue from passenger trains is beneficial to amortize fixed costs or B. There's enough passenger traffic and ROW margin to lay a separate set of tracks. That also prevents most passenger/freight collisions. I'd rather take a train than a bus or today's miserable flying conditions, but mixed operations seem to be a money loser that disrupts the main function of the national rail network. If anything we should be focused on taking more trucks off the road, with, say, a RoadRailer 2.0 going to population centers. |
