Re: South Shore question

Question for you: How is the South Shore split? I have read various versions & I'm looking for valid answers. This is what I'm going with until corrected. Please provide links to any changes if possible:

NICTD owns ALL the track, (freight only mileage included) owns & maintains the MUs and all associated hardware (signaling, stations, buildings, etc.) & is responsible for dispatching. It is no longer classified as an interurban, losing that designation when Venango(?) went bankrupt in '89 & sold everything off. NICTD is classified as a Commuter Railroad.

Anacostia owns the diesels, all CSS freight cars & little else. It is responsible for all inventory associated with the freight operation. Additionally it is billed by NICTD for shop space at Michigan City to maintain the Geeps, for track space it uses to serve customers & for dispatching services. Anacostia pays the freight side management, office staff, mechanics & freight crews directly. CSS is classified as a Class III Railroad.

Additions/corrections are welcome from anyone that reads this.
