That makes sense about the tower not being able to see the train so the white-white for both destinations was not an issue. But savvy riders also knew the lights, and so different colors for different destinations would have helped the riders even if the tower didn't need them. And there certainly were enough color combinations not to have to use the same ones for different terminals. I remember once at a family Thanksgiving dinner in the '60s my father and uncle were fondly reminiscing about the days when they could tell which Lexington Av express was a "Jerome" train by the lights, and they rattled off the different combinations they remembered. |
