Tuscarora Train of the Week No. 6

New York City Transit Authority
Division B
Rt. KK 6th Avenue – Broadway/Brooklyn Local
July 1968

The “KK” was in service from July 1968 through December 1972 or about four and a half years. It was the successor to the #14 Broadway-Brooklyn Local which became the “JJ” after November 1968.
This essay will look at its operation in its first month of operation, July 1968.

The “KK” was the first and for many years the only train to use the two track connection between Broadway-Lafayette Street station on the IND 6th Avenue Line and Essex Street station on the BMT Centre Street Line. Service ran during rush hours only. The central part of the service was the operation between 57th Street – 6th Avenue and 168th Street-Jamaica Avenue with “B” skip-stop service. However there where many variations in the operation which we will look at here.

Please note that the “Broadway” referred to is Broadway on Brooklyn and not Manhattan. 168th Street = 168th Street Jamaica Avenue, 57th Street = 57th Street-Sixth Avenue, Atlantic Avenue = Atlantic Avenue – Canarsie Line, Metropolitan Avenue = Metropolitan Avenue-Ridgewood. Also the number preceding the route names are not official and used only for clarification.

Lv: 111th Street (to 57th Street) 6:59 and 7:08 AM all stops

No. 2) 6th Avenue-Broadway-Canarsie Local

Lv: Rockaway Parkway 6:21, 6:40 and 6:55 AM
Lv: Atlantic Avenue 6:10, 6:20, 6:38, 6:56 and 8:49 to 9:26 AM
4:53 and 4:59 PM
Lv: 57th Street (to Atlantic Avenue) 7:46-8:44 AM five trains
No. 3 6th Avenue-Broadway Local

Lv: Eastern Parkway 3:08-5:58 PM
Lv: 57th Street 8:16, 8:34 and 8:51-10:11 AM

No.4 6th Avenue-Broadway-Myrtle Avenue Local

Lv: 57th Street (to Metropolitan Avenue / Ridgewood)7:26 - 8:09 AM (4 trains)

A 6th Avenue-Myrtle Avenue routing had been included in the plans for the service after the Chrystie Street lines opened. It would have been designated as “MM” and the map color would have been green. This route was never put into service but four “KK” trains ran from 57th Street to Metropolitan Avenue at the end of the AM rush presumably to lay up at Fresh Pond Yard.

Train displayed White-White markers lights if they were operating to 57th Street, 168th Street or Rockaway Parkway, Red-Yellow for Atlantic Avenue and Red-Green for Eastern Parkway. I do not know what the markers for Metropolitan Avenue where.

Service began one July 1 with eight car trains of R-1/9’s. This was cut to six cars on July 5. The surplus cars were transferred to the “M” train.

Trains operating the “B” skip-stop service on the Jamaica Line would stop at 168th Street, 160th Street, Sutphin Boulevard, Queens Boulevard, Metropolitan Avenue, 102nd Street, Elderts Lane, Cypress Hills, Norwood Avenue, Van Siclen Avenue, Alabama Avenue and Eastern Parkway.

About this time the “A” and “B” skip-signs which had been displayed at stations were replaced with “QJ” and “KK” signs.
