Re: [PHOTO] Guess This Location

Posted by Express Rider on Tue Jan 15 22:05:13 2019, in response to [PHOTO] Guess This Location, posted by Bill Newkirk on Tue Jan 15 19:45:59 2019.

Is the location Fifth Ave. el, 16 St. station?

The building in the background has a large wall ad some of which is readable as "Michaels &"..."503-504. I googled "Michaels &" in quotes and sure enough at the following website, brownstone detectives (Park Slope), there was an article on its webpage about the building URL:

http://www.brownstonedetectives.com/category/park-slope/ (you may have to scroll up or down the page to locate the article)

I found the following: "For those of you familiar with 5th Avenue in Brooklyn,...[the building] ...known as Nos. 503-505. ... the entire floor was at one time taken over with bedroom sets, kitchen tables, and dinettes – a furniture store known as Michael’s & Co."

Initially, this was confusing, since I thought the wall ad pertained to the building on which it was painted. But this building was on a cross street to fifth ave. beyond the el. From the Brownstone site, google mapping it, 503-504[505] looked like it was close to th 14th street cross street. However there didn't seem to be any large building there currently, could it have beeen torn down that recently since the Brownstone article? (if it was a larger building?)

I then figured, the Michael's ad on the wall was billboard sized advertising, on another large building on the cross street, so it would be visible to people riding on the el**; however Michael's was actually on 5th ave.

Google map gave the 503-505 location being at about 14th St. so that seemed close enough to the 16th street station.

**I found this explanation on an old webpage of the Forgotten New York site - Thank you, author, and webmaster Kevin!
