I said it tongue in cheek. We moved to New Jersey in 1967 and that was when I became immersed in the subway system. I rode on the R-16s exactly twice, 19 years apart. My first ride on them was on September 23, 1967 on a - you guessed it - 15 across the Williamsburg Bridge from Marcy Ave. to Essex St. That 15 caught me by surprise and I actually did wonder what a 15 was. I caught a glimpse of one of the side route signs and my question was answered. Back then, riding on the BMT standards was cruel and unusual punishment, and I rode them for two years every Saturday on the Lonesome Larry. I'd gotten used to seeing route and destination signs above the storm door and the standards had neither. They looked as though they were from another century. |
