How many subways in the world run with three separate car size specs??MBTA has four. SEPTA has three. Tokyo has five (Cape Gauge, Scotch Gauge, Standard Gauge 1.5kvdc, Standard Gauge 3rd rail, and the Oedo line which is incompatible with anything else). Or to put into perspective, the number of places that the 75' cars can run on NYCT is larger than most North American subway systems, ditto the number of places they can't go. Fleet standardization has its place, but when you're *that big*, you can standardize on 3 sizes. |
