And just how often does that happen? Not to mention a disoriented person would not be able to see any "Exit" sign much less focus on it no matter how visible. Smoke would obscure the sign anyhow. A seated engineer somehow falls on the floor and gets disoriented? Make-believe scenario.

Firefighters can recognize a door quite easily, and they would not be looking for an "Exit" sign either.
