I'm sure I must have read details about the fourth rail system somewhere, but don't remember the principle of it (besides the fourth being a separate negative return rail), how it was developed and why London's existing system(s) adopted it in the beginning.

Isle of Wight uses a traditional third rail system. When tube trains were sent there (Standard & later 1938 stock) their electrical systems had to be converted to third rail operation.
