LIRR isn't going to ever deliver JR East levels of service, and there isn't much demand for it

There is demand on the Port Washington branch. I suspect the Hempstead branch too if they were cheaper (or at least not 4x the price of N6 to Subway).

Plus there's induced demand. If you build it, they will come. In this case "building it" means less expensive frequent service. High density housing will sprout up around the stations shortly after.

The Keikyu line only has barriers at the Airport itself, and possibly Shinagawa. Which are likely the two stations you visited. I wonder if Japan has resisted platform screen doors partially due to the high demand for clean sightlines for rail photography... it would be trivial to add to many stations, virtually all lines have had doors in predictable locations for the past 30 years (thus the platform markings which line up perfectly).
