It could have been Conrail itself. Maybe Penn Central told Conrail it wanted to sell the yards, unless Conrail paid more money, and Conrail said no. Don't know what the agreement was between Conrail and Penn Central.I agree that it would have slowed West Side gentrification (I can imagine new West Side residents petitioning the mayor and governor to get rid of the "noisy rail yards"!), but only in the area close to the yards, at most. There's so much pressure with Manhattan real estate, the landowner would probably have decided to sell eventually, or they might even attempt to deck over part of the yards. I can also see it putting a crimp in Amtrak's plan to move Empire Corridor trains to Penn Station, unless Conrail's traffic was light enough not to be a problem. I remember passing by the yards in '79 or '80 on the Dayliner and seeing "lots" of freight cars in the yards at the time. What a difference a few years makes. |
