Re: Map: 1947 SAS Proposal

The lower portion certainly was upgraded to handle the WF-LoVs and the R12s- (the work was probably done at the time of the Dual Contracts), but I don't think they ever got it to the point where it could hold full-length, full-powered subway cars. The R12s had to be modified to restrict their speed and braking - dynamic braking was cut out.

But regardless of what extent they did or didn't modify it to- I think it's a travesty that they tore it down. Even running as its own line, the 8 train provided a necessary connection. The MTA was so proud of getting rid of it- there's a 1973 video on You Tube where they bast of modernizing transportation in the area by permanently bustituting the line. Ronan was also quoted in the NY Times to the effect that replacing the el with buses was a necessary modernization. What a disgrace. They should have ordered the R39s.

Also, there seems to have been no objection at all from local officials to the demise of the 8 train- whereas, at least there were ineffective attempts to save the Myrtle Av El (MJ)
