There was always weather stripping, but pre R-26, it was a different type that wasn’t as prone to vandalism as the later cars were What is interesting is that rather than return to the older style of windows, the MTA chose to use a metal grommet around the existing design to replace the vandal prone rubber. By the way there were quite a few R-21 and 22 cars on the #5 in 1967 since that actually got assigned there as early as 1960 when they shared fleets with the #2. Initially, they were only used on weekends when shorter trains were operated since the platforms were not yet long enough to platform a full 10 car train of R types.
