The fastest train on the CA&E was the "Cannonball" limited, one hour from Wells St. terminal to Elgin and Aurora. (The limiteds split at Wheaton.) There was an eastbound Cannonball in the morning rush. Other limiteds covered the distance in 70 minutes. The fastest train on the Milwaukee Road was an express from Union Station to Elgin in 50 minutes. I'm not as familiar with the Burlington, but the raceway from Union Station to Aurora is famous.

The great advantage of the CA&E was the frequency of the trains (three trains an hour in each direction between Wheaton and Chicago) and distribution in Chicago, thanks to free transfer to the "L". CA&E was conceived as a high-speed interurban.
