The reason for the carbon steel on the R-44s was that it was felt that the blue paint would adhere better to carbon steel than it would to stainless despite the fact that the R-40Ms and 42s as well as the M-1s had blue painted on stainless since those cars came from Budd which built only stainless steel. |
