I remember working on 1950's diesels in a museum and acknowledging that although "modern" railroading to me they were 40 years old. Then I remembered that the steamers I started with there 25 years previous were also "only" 40 years old at the time.A suggestion for today's museums is to watch out for the scrapping of sister equipment and try to buy the electronics boxes. Finding 1980's thyristors and integrated circuits is a lot harder than having 1920's boiler sheets made. The electronics boxes shouldn't have a high scrap value either. Failure of one unavailable $20 chip can permanently sideline a car. Bill |
