The Broadway (Boulevard) Line was planned as a two track subway. After construction had begun it was decided to change it into a three track line. There was a considerable amount of re-construction. A third track was added at 103rd Street to the east of the original two track. Consequently a new wall and ceiling had to be carved out of the east wall. Here is a photo, from the website referenced in another thread, that shows the subway under construction along Broadway at 103 Street. It does appear that the excavation has been enlarged along the east side of Broadway. This is also the point where the tunnel to Lenox Avenue branches off below the Broadway local tracks.
