Tuscarora Almanac – July 9, 1958 – The Book of First Runs

Jersey City, New Jersey
Hudson & Manhattan Railroad
Pennsylvania Railroad

Fifty new cars begin service on the H&M primarily intended the Newark-Jersey City joint operation. The first thirty cars (1200-1229) are paid for by the Pennsylvania Railroad and designated as MP-51. The next twenty cars (1230-1249) are purchased by the H&M and known as Class K.

“A” trains which had terminated at Euclid Avenue are extended to Far Rockaway. This will apply to weekday midday and evening trains as well as on weekends from about 9 AM to 10 PM.

Hoboken, New Jersey
New Jersey Transit Rail Operations

The first ALP-44 electric locomotive No. 4400 enters service today on the Morristown Line of New Jersey Transit. The first run is on Train No. 639, the 5:12 PM run from Hoboken to Dover. The consist is (w) 5120 - 5806 - 1759 - 5736 - 5989 - 4400. It is currently the only train on the Hoboken Division with the engine on the east end.

Wassaic, New York
Metro-North Railroad

Service is restored on the Harlem Line between Dover Plains and Wassaic, New York. The first train was #9910 and it left Wassaic at 6:25 AM. The consist was (n) FL-9 2005, Shoreliner IV coaches 6333 and 6305.

Passenger service north of Dover Plains was discontinued by Penn Central in 1972.

The next day July 10 the Metro-North Inspection train up from GCT with railroad officials for a ceremonial opening. I was there my official capacity. (That is to say I was working). The inspection train consist was FL-9's 2041, 2042 and the Inspection cars 3-1-2. Souvenir whistles were distributed to those present and I still have mine.

The first train of the Kawasaki built PA-5’s begins service today. The consist was (e) 5601-5103-5600-5102-5101-5603.
