36&4th sounds just like when I lived out 25th Ave on the West End in 1986-87 (B back then). The whole 4th Ave subway was skeletonized down to 95th. 10mph speed limit at all times. That was on top of the misery of the Manny B closures. Savvy riders made sure they got on the right train in Manhattan during the daytime to avoid a transfer.

After 10PM, everyone going to Sea Beach or West End just took the R and endured the local ride even if the D was ready to go. At Dekalb it would always be pulling in as the R was departing. Most of the time that was the previous R but sometimes it was the one it left 34th or 14th with. Then, there were the miserable waits at 36th for your connecting train, which usually meant seeing the tail lights of the train you wanted disappearing into the tunnel as the doors opened.
