Posted by W.B. on Mon Jun 11 17:34:22 2018, in response to Tuscarora Almanac for June 11, posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Mon Jun 11 08:26:16 2018. The end of the Ninth Avenue el led, starting on October 7, 1940, to two bus routes being extended, initially on a 6-month trial basis, to South Ferry: the Sixth Avenue 5 route of New York City Omnibus (once and future southern terminus Fulton Street), and the Ninth and Amsterdam Avenues 11 route of Eighth Avenue Coach (previously terminated south, and would do so in the future, at Abingdon Square). This set of extensions only lasted to 1942-43 when U.S. Office of Defense Transportation (ODT) restrictions on gas mileage led to these routes' south ends to be truncated to their prior termini where M11 remains to this day, and 5 did until its Nov. 10, 1963 discontinuance. |
