Re: South Phoenix residents push to stop light rail expansion

Posted by Dave on Sun Jun 10 14:00:43 2018, in response to Re: South Phoenix residents push to stop light rail expansion, posted by George Foelschow on Sun Jun 10 13:06:11 2018.

When MetroLink constructed in St. Louis, there were three votes to extend the line from the airport out to St. Charles (a suburb in a neighboring county, separated from St. Louis County by the Missouri River) using existing ROW and in most of the route, existing track and an extant RR bridge over the river. It was voted down all three times and after the last vote, St. Charles demolished the bridge. Why? Because MetroLink ran from East. St. Louis (a poor, minority city with a high crime rate) to Lambert Field, and St. Charles residents didn't want "blacks taking the train out here to rob our homes."
