Tuscarora Almanac for May 26

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Sat May 26 07:03:57 2018

Tuscarora Almanac - May 26, 1935 - The Book of First Runs

Newark, New Jersey
Public Service Coordinated Transport

The Newark City Subway opened today between Broad Street and Heller Parkway. It was built utilizing the roadbed of the former Morris and Essex Canal.

Mr. Jan K. Lorenzen provided the following information.
Bill McKelvey of the Liberty Historic Railway confirms that the entire original Newark City Subway from Franklin Ave to Penn Station was built in the bed of the Morris Canal, including the subway portion under what is now Raymond Blvd. He's got a slide collection of the reconstruction that shows the transition. There's a book titled “ The Morris Canal” that has many of the shots also.
