本? All by itself it means book, and if preceded by a number it means cylindrical objects such as bottles or pens. Apparently, historically it meant "origin". 日本 means Japan (literally sun origin) which is why they are called "land of the rising sun".

Though nowadays it just looks like "sun book?"
