In 1956 Manhattan borough president Hulan Jack unveiled a plan for a 100,000 seat stadium for the Giants on the Far West Side, to be built atop the NY Central RR 60th Street Yards. Nothing ever came of this proposal because, as other posters noted, Giant owner Horace Stoneham had already decided to decamp to Minneapolis where the team had its top minor league franchise. Then Walter O'Malley stepped in and convinced Stoneham to bring the Giants to San Francisco so that the two teams could continue their storied rivalry on the West Coast. |
