Most state hospitals are long gone. There used to be three on Long Island, Pilgrim State, Kings Park, and Central Islip. Each of them was basically a small city with thousands of patients in many buildings (and each had an LIRR spur).Kings Park and Central Islip have been closed completely for over 20 years. Pilgrim State is still open, but on a greatly reduced basis with no more than a couple hundred patients. |
