Many things can be done by the engineer, but will vastly increase the train's delay. What if a train overshoots because of wet leaves and needs to back up? What if someone needs to look under a train for an obstacle? I've observed both.The engineer can do it, but the track will be blocked for way longer and the passengers will cool their heels for way long if there is no conductor. |
