Dual contract IRT elevated lines like Jerome were built to BMT specs like the Lex Av and Pelham subways. Prior to recent station rehabs, station platforms on those lines had metal extenders to close the gap between the actual platform edge and the narrower IRT car bodies. In the case of the els, the wooden platforms were merely built to platform IRT cars and if ever at some point connected to either the BMT or IND, then the platforms could be cut back with a circular or other type of saw as was done on the Astoria Line. As was the case with the Astoria Line, the signals were already mounted to clear 10 ft wide cars even though it wasn’t immediately necessary.
