Note the style of the metal plate signs. Presumably the Local signs could be changed to Express opposite the destination to which the train was running. With that arrangement the signs wouldn’t have to be changed when the express trains operated against traffic as locals. I had heard that the standard body Steinways also received that type of sign box when exp service was instituted for the World’s Fair but whether it was the case or not, can’t be documented since when they were transferred to the mainline, they had the regular mainline signs as opposed to the W/Fs which retained the short signs. The original R type signs on Flushing Line cars were also unique in that they displayed readings with arrows pointing in the direction the class oF service was operating: or depending on the direction.
